Flu shot

I took my son to a pediatric doctor for a checkup. On the way out, the doctor reminded me that he is due for his flu shot and a nurse came to administer the flu shot. My son was asked to lie down on a table and within seconds she poked his thighs with the needle and injected the medicine. I could see all the navarasa emotions in a span of 10 seconds in his face but he managed without letting his tear drop from his eyes. The process was so smooth and fast.

I still remember my sister would hold on to the windows and would not let go as she is scared of the injection procedures. It made me curious to find out why the administration of injection in thighs are not followed as much despite thigh muscles are very well qualified for a intramuscular injection.

Unicef Guidelines to prescribers:

I came across an unicef guidelines for the prescriber which states that Never inject children under two years of age in the buttock. Inject them in the upper outer part of the thigh.

Injections over use in developing countries:

While looking for reasons for the above, I happened to stumble up on researches that stated, that there is over use of injections in developing countries like ours
